John Malone Tops the List of Largest U.S. Landowners; Ted Turner is The New No. 2

Land Report Fall 2011 CoverDALLAS, Tex. – The Land Report has declared a new king of the hill atop its annual list of America’s largest landowners – media magnate John Malone. Malone’s rise highlights the magazine’s fall issue, which features the 2011 Land Report 100, Presented by Fay Ranches.

Ted Turner, another land-loving media mogul, was ousted from the top spot when Malone purchased more than 1 million acres of timberland in Maine and New Hampshire earlier this year. This acquisition pushed the chairman of Liberty Media into the top spot with holdings totaling 2.2 million acres. Turner has a firm grip on the No. 2 ranking with ownership of more than 2 million acres, according to the 2011 Land Report 100, Presented by Fay Ranches.

There was a good discussion on a new generation of members based in Denver, CO known as the Greenbacks. These groups of 30-40 year olds seek to promote native Colorado fish and their habitat through the engagement and recruitment of the next generation of Trout Unlimited members.

State of Colorado Vs Ranchers and Farmers

State of Colorado Vs Ranchers and Farmers

The State of Colorado lawmakers have proposed a bill which would strengthen their position in water lawsuits. This was prompted by a loss to Farmers and Ranchers in court in a 2009 water dispute where farmers and ranchers argued that the state engineer failed to protect their water rights from gas wells.

The new bill would place the burden of proof on farmers and ranchers. Courts would have to presume the state engineer’s findings that drilling would not deplete surface water is correct unless farmers or ranchers can prove otherwise.

The state already has passed a bill that allows the state engineer to create maps that show where wells would affect surface water and if a well is outside of that zone the water would not have to be replenished because it would be considered too deep to affect the surface water. Ranchers and Farmers have filed suit against this law as well.
