The Salmon Flies finally showed up on the Madison River in Montana this past week. Greg Fay headed up and floated from Lyons Bridge to Mcatee with friend Branif Scott and did well on adult Salmon Fly patterns. The rivers are all fishing great and the weather in Montana is gorgeous with highs in the 80’s, low humidity and sunny skies. If you are suffering from the heat wave that seems to have its grip on most of the country, come on out and wet a fly.

The Fay Ranches boys in Colorado just wrapped up their late winter marketing meeting with what else… fly fishing ! Team Colorado members John Hayter, Coble Thurman, and Chip Lenihan capped off a two day meeting at one of their premier listings, Roaring Fork Overlook, just a few miles downstream from Aspen. “This Colorado property has the best single hole on the Fork” boasts listing Broker Chip Lenihan. Not guys to take anyone’s word when it comes to fish talk, Hayter and Thurman checked it out for themselves and landed over a dozen fish in about an hour and a half. A size 18 mayfly emerger pattern aptly named “Mayhem” was the silver bullet of the afternoon.

For someone who loves to catch trout in excess of 20” and enjoys waterfowl and pheasant hunting as well as whitetail deer and turkeys, it doesn’t get any better than Fish Creek Ranch in Montana. The ranch, on the Jefferson River near Whitehall, MT, has 1605 +/- acres of incredible river bottom habitat. There are huge cottonwoods, a small spring creek that doesn’t freeze, over two miles of Fish Creek which has monster trout as well as +/- 4 miles of the Jefferson River. I love this ranch. Fish Creek is one of the coolest and least fished streams I’ve been on. Someone is going to get a heck of a ranch at a great price, we just reduced it from $8.5m to $6.8m.

This week my fellow ranch broker, Coble Thurman, and I attended a Denver Angling Society Luncheon sponsored by Colorado Trout Unlimited. We enjoyed some great food, made several new acquaintances, and enjoyed a great presentation given by Mark Lance on fly fishing Patagonia. Mark Lance is a great fly fisherman and photographer and his wife, Sharon Lance, is a Trout Unlimited Trustee. Truly great people and great resources if you love fly fishing.

Fly Fishing the Frying Pan River

Chip Lenihan fly fishing for rainbow trout on the Frying Pan River in Colorado The “Pan” is one of the most famous trout streams in Colorado and the country for a very good reason: lots of trout and year round dry fly fishing! Almost every day the fish in this beautiful small river spend anywhere from 10 minutes to three hours sipping emergers or chompin’ baetis duns on the surface. Last Friday it was the latter with 6’ to 20’ rainbow trout doing their thing on size 18 Mayfly duns. The action was fast and furious from 11 until about 1:30 with my buddy and I netting some 15 trout on size 18 BWOs (darker patterns worked the best). Lost three pigs due to the one drawback to this feeding frenzy: 7x tippet is a must. Did bring a couple of 17”ers to hand, which made the day!
