Hunting the High Desert of Eastern Oregon

Well, the days are getting shorter and temps are beginning to drop here in Eastern Oregon. We are entering Fall, and this means the start of hunting season in the mountain country of eastern Oregon. Archers start this weekend and have high expectations. With hundreds of thousands of acres of public land, the promise of trophy elk and deer is certain. One of our greatest features in the high desert and mountainous terrain of Eastern Oregon is the opportunity for big game hunting.

Wildlife and Fishing in Florida

One fall Missoula evening, perched on a stool at the Kettlehouse, my fly fishing partner mentioned that he was ready to do some guide fishing in the Florida Keys.  I crowed, “If you go, I’m coming down to fish with you!”  Surprisingly, he went and two weeks after his departure, I found myself booking a trip for the end of February. We started in Naples, hit the Everglades and went directly to the Keys for several days of fly-fishing.

Fisherwomen Have More Allure

Woman Fly fishing in Naples Florida"The wonderful warm and inviting Florida sun may warm our skin but Montana will always keep our hearts warm."

The Ladies at Fay Ranches jumped ship this winter to enjoy the warm Florida sun. Of course, you can't have a Fay crew go anywhere without spending the day fishing. We cruised the Gulf with our wonderful fishing guide, Capt. Joey D. We soon realized the Jack fish had us outnumbered but we were able to snag some impressive red snappers, sheepheads, spotted sea trout and of course a few pieces of coral. With mimosas in hand, we finished our fishing exertion watching the sunset on the beautiful beaches in Naples.

Mesa Vista Ranch - A Shining Example of Great Vision and Stewardship

Last month I (B. Elfland) was fortunate to spend the weekend at Boone Pickens’ Mesa Vista Ranch in the Texas Panhandle, courtesy of Eddie Lee Rider and Eric O’Keefe of The Land Report. Mesa Vista Ranch is truly one of a kind. I don’t imagine there is another ranch anywhere in the world that’s quite like it.

It was a wonderful weekend- educational, relaxing and often dazzling- but I was most impressed with Mr. Pickens’ clear vision for the ranch and the obvious pride and joy that he feels from making that dream a reality.

Fly Fishing With Orvis and Molly Semenik in Paradise Valley, Montana

Take a look at a fun fly fishing video done not too far from the Diamond B River Ranch, a spectacular cattle ranch property we currently have listed in Emigrant, Montana, just north of the original entrance to Yellowstone National Park. This is a one-of-a-kind ranch, and it is close to a remarkable variety of fishing venues.

The February 27 blog by Christine Penn posted on OrvisNews.com features a fun December outing to Depuy’s Spring Creek in the Paradise Valley by Orvis casting instructor Molly Semenik. “Her fly of choice? A mouse pattern, of course.”

Semenik and another Orvis casting instructor took 1st Place honors in the prestigious Best of the West Casting Competition this last weekend at the International Sportsman’s Expo in Denver, CO.

Texas Travels with B. Elfland

A couple weeks ago I [B. Elfland] traveled to Texas to visit friends and tour different parts of the state. What a fun and interesting trip.

Cattle for sale in Texas

First stop, Irma’s in downtown Houston…a must visit I had been told. It was excellent.

Then I spent the next couple of days at 44 Farms in Cameron for their spring bull sale. What a setting for a terrific event! The bulls sold well. 44 Farms is marketing their own brand of “44 beef.” I highly recommend it!

Experiencing the “Holy Grail of Fly Fishing” in the Bahamas

Awesome. Exhilarating. How else can I [Ryan Flair] express having “Eagle Eye” Fred, a top-notch fly-fishing guide, put me on over 20 Permit? After three and a half days on the water, I finally connected with a beautiful Permit. After 30 minutes of a fierce fight, we were shooting pictures. We also crushed big Bonefish, landing several in the 8-lb+ range and seeing several 10 pounders.

The Yellow Dog Fly Fishing team put together the perfect trip for achieving my goal of getting the elusive Permit on the fly—a coup for a fly fisherman. Permit are extremely spooky and finicky about striking a fly; once hooked, their endurance and fight is legendary. Hence they are referred to as the “Holy Grail of Fly Fishing.”

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort Ranked First by Forbes

Forbes magazine has rated Jackson Hole Mountain Resort the number one ski resort in the United States, which comes as no surprise to those of us lucky enough to live or grow up here.

TetonsLong known for its challenging terrain and legendary vertical drop, the masses are now more aware of the resort’s varied terrain for all skill sets, its incredible amenities (Four Seasons, Hotel Terra, Shooting Star) and a new, bigger airport with direct flights from Chicago, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Denver, Salt Lake City, Atlanta and Los Angeles.

DID YOU KNOW?

Fay Ranches Jackson Hole broker Mike Jorgenson grew up in Jackson, and has made both the resort and the many other recreational activities offered in this valley his playground for over 30 years.

Dressage and Horse Properties in Montana

Dressage? In Montana?  When I think of dressage, Princess Anne comes to mind, or the rarely-televised event in the Olympics, or the perfectly green and manicured rings found in …. Connecticut??  New York state?  In fact, as a born and bred ranch girl from Montana, I wasn’t even sure what dressage was, until I attended a show this past summer right here in the Gallatin Valley.  Do I know anything more about dressage today than in August?  The answer is no, but it was the most beautiful combination of balletic grace and athleticism on the part of both horse and rider that I have witnessed.
