Most of the programs are agricultural based, but as varied as robotics and archery.

Kids work very hard on their projects to prepare and qualify for fair. Many projects begin the previous fall, 9 months prior to fair. The 4-H guidelines require that the kids care for and train their animals. At the fair you won’t see professionals riding kids horses or parents scooping out stalls… the kids have to do it on their own.

That’s not to say that parents aren’t supportive… and busy! There is a great sense of comraderie and support for all the kids... a genuine appreciation for hard work and a job well done. When you see kids rush to congratulate a class winner it’s obvious that good values are being passed along.

One new highlight of the horse program is a pilot ranch horse project. In this program kids learn practical ranch skills, such as roping, sorting and penning cows. Our daughter competed in the ranch trail class and team penning. You better believe those kids are proud when they successfully sort and pen cattle in a timed event format.

Our daughter also competed in a wide variety of show horse events, including horsemanship, showmanship and pleasure. The Sunday finale was a rodeo with barrel racing, pole bending, key hole race, flag race and team ribbon race. Everything was conducted with safety as the primary goal and the kids performed superbly. The awards were generous and the BBQ afterwards drew a couple hundred people.

It was great to see all the kids’ hard work rewarded at the fair. Those ribbons are hard earned and it’s very apparent in their smiles
