Dressage and Horse Properties in Montana

Dressage? In Montana?  When I think of dressage, Princess Anne comes to mind, or the rarely-televised event in the Olympics, or the perfectly green and manicured rings found in …. Connecticut??  New York state?  In fact, as a born and bred ranch girl from Montana, I wasn’t even sure what dressage was, until I attended a show this past summer right here in the Gallatin Valley.  Do I know anything more about dressage today than in August?  The answer is no, but it was the most beautiful combination of balletic grace and athleticism on the part of both horse and rider that I have witnessed.

But wait… is that true?  What about the perfect fusion of equine and man demonstrated in a cutting horse competition, horse working low and fast on the slack rein of his rider, who appears to sit motionless in the saddle? Or the speed, skill and almost reckless partnership of rodeo horse and rider?  I have the good fortune to live next door to a reining horse training stable – watching these horses as they spin and slide and execute perfect patterns under the quiet touch of their trainer is breathtaking.  In return for mucking out stalls and saddling one spring, I even had a chance to experience the feeling of vortex at the center of a spinning horse. It was indescribable and exhilarating.  For those of us who love horses like we are of the same blood, just saddling up to ride up a mountain or trail behind a dusty herd of cattle is still beauty in motion.
