Being born and raised in the Midwest listening to too many John Denver songs, Jim had a great desire to take to the Western life. After completing a B.S. in Agronomy and class work for a Masters in Agricultural Economics from the University of Missouri-Columbia, he headed to Montana as a Sales Associate with Monsanto Ag Chemical Company in 1981.

Based in Missoula, Jim found the coolest red cabin on the banks of Rock Creek and started his understanding of the blend of agriculture and recreation. Jim recalls, “After several years, when according to my old boss, I was fishing more than selling, I jumped into my new passion with both feet and started the Grizzly Hackle Fishing Company. The next thing you know (14 seasons later) we were the largest outfitter, lodge and fly fishing store in Western Montana.”

By that time, Jim had met many other friends and clients who also shared this love of Montana and fly-fishing. He followed many of them as they found their “own corner of Montana to lean on” by purchasing property. Jim was even invited to join one of them as a partner in a ranch that was meant to replicate the wonderful fishing clubs he had come to know. Unfortunately, September 11 dealt a fatal blow to this plan and Jim took a temporary detour to a private ski resort at Big Sky called the Yellowstone Club as a marketing consultant.

But now this prodigal son has returned to his fishing, hunting and agricultural roots by joining with guys here at Fay Ranches, a place made for him and his experiences.
