Burnt River Ranch is located at the edge of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest approximately 10 miles north of Unity, Oregon off Highway 26 and about 45 miles from Baker City, Oregon. The property is reached by a county-maintained gravel road from the north or the south. Sumpter, a small historic mining town located off Highway 7, is 16 miles from the property and has a wonderful mining history with many signs of “days gone by” still visible in the area. The first miners showed up in the valley in 1862 while making their way to the California gold fields. The four gentlemen did not make it to California; they had found gold on Cracker Creek and the rush for gold was on for the next couple of decades. Mining continued until 1953, but now the town is mainly a recreational stop for people searching for mountain serenity.
The nearest commercial airport is located approximately 2½ hours to the east in Boise, Idaho. Daily flights are served by United, Northwest, Southwest, Horizon and Sky West Airlines. John Day, Oregon, approximately 45 miles to the west, has a small airfield with a 4,500 ft. asphalt runway.
