Landowners Work Together To Protect Montana’s Yellowstone River

A blog by James Esperti, Partner, Sales Associate, Licensed in MT, WY, ID

We just received exciting news for the 5,556± acre Engwis Ranch and surrounding landowners: the threat of a neighboring wind farm has been mitigated! Local landowners worked together and were successful in getting a preliminary injunction placed on Pattern Energy and their plans to install a commercial wind farm just west of the Ranch. Commercial wind farms can have serious impacts on surrounding landowners and in this case, would be disruptive to an important part of the Yellowstone River Corridor.

This is a monumental decision by the courts that will keep this section of the Yellowstone River Corridor intact for future generations to enjoy and cherish. The Engwis Ranch is located along 3.5± miles of one of the world’s greatest fly-fishing rivers and is positioned conveniently between the towns of Livingston and Big Timber.  The ranch’s 5,556± diversified acres have been managed meticulously for the past 37 years, enhancing both wildlife and range productivity.  Along with being home to various species of wildlife, the ranch boasts a wonderful agricultural operation, including 600± acres under pivot irrigation along with multiple fenced pastures laden with water.  The ranch is the perfect blend of wildlife and productivity.

From its northern boundary, the ranch feathers down toward the famous Yellowstone River. Multiple coulées and drainages lined with cottonwood, aspen, and willow trees serve as excellent wildlife corridors. As the ranch drops in elevation, the lush rolling grasslands and meadows splinter into productive pivot irrigated fields, then onward to the rich riparian zone teeming with a multitude of birds and big game. The ranch is surrounded by “Big Sky” views in all directions: the Gallatin Mountains to the West, the Absaroka/Beartooth range to the south, and the Crazy Mountains to the North. As the seasons change, so do the breathtaking vistas. For additional photos, please visit this site.
