Life in the Beartooth Mountains: Fishtail, Montana

By Kimberly Lowry, Broker Associate, Licensed in MT

Fishtail, Montana, is a classic rural Montana town complete with an eclectic little general store with a variety of goods and sundries, a cowboy bar and supper club to suit almost every insatiable appetite, and a coffee house that has provided what locals and visitors alike refer to as the best coffee around.  The quintessential charm of Fishtail and its proximity to other area communities that bring the allure of authentic Montana living, including Absarokee and Red Lodge, make this region ideal for both full-time and part-time residents to call home.

Fishtail offers true rural Montana living and easy access to the region’s abundant recreational opportunities with a scenic Beartooth Mountains backdrop.  From skiing at nearby Red Lodge Mountain, and fishing along one of the nearby streams or creeks that flow crisp and cool waters from the surrounding mountains to hiking, mountain biking, or touring the Beartooth Scenic Highway, there is much to do in the Fishtail area.

More recently, the area has attracted visitors from near and far to enjoy a unique experience minutes from the small town and just a short drive from Fay Ranches’ Beartooth Meadows Ranch listing.  If the idea of being in Big Sky Country, framed by the Beartooth Mountains and surrounded by music and art, is appealing, you may wish to add a stop at the Tippet Rise Art Center to your bucket list.  Founded by Peter and Cathy Halstead after their purchase of the pristine 10,000± acre cattle and sheep ranch in 2010, the center opened its doors to the public in 2017, hosting several musical performances and art events.  The surroundings alone are truly nature’s artwork, and the working ranch also features large-scale sculptures that dot the landscape alongside livestock.  Visitors can choose to explore the ranch on foot, by bicycle, or by van tour.  In addition, the Tippet Rise Art Center features both indoor and outdoor concert venues for musical performances that have quickly become a hot ticket item, often booking many months in advance. Don’t miss this unique opportunity!
