Small Town, Big Dreams: Cokeville Goes to DC

In November 2023, the Fay Rural Community Foundation (FRCF) had the privilege of supporting the Cokeville High School junior class in a way that exemplifies the power of community-driven generosity. Through the dedication of Fay Ranches Wyoming land agents Neil Bangs and Kelsea Vaughan, along with the remarkable contributions of Garden & Gun Magazine and a generous couple from Charleston, South Carolina, we helped ensure that every student in the class could participate in an unforgettable journey to Washington, DC.
What began as a significant funding gap threatening to limit student participation became an inspiring success story of generosity and support. When the need was shared, our network of donors stepped up—eliminating financial barriers and making it possible for all 16 students to experience a trip that broadened their perspectives and created lifelong memories.
For many, this trip marked several important firsts. Some students had never flown on an airplane, while others had never traveled beyond the landscapes of the West. Exploring the nation’s capital, walking the halls of history, and witnessing the foundations of American democracy firsthand was a life-changing experience. As one student said, “This experience has opened my eyes.”
Cokeville, Wyoming, is a small but strong community of approximately 500 residents, known for its deep rural roots and unwavering spirit. Opportunities for students to engage in experiences beyond their hometown can be rare, making this journey all the more meaningful. Thanks to the kindness of those who contributed, these students were given an opportunity that extended far beyond the classroom—a chance to grow, learn, and dream bigger.

“This was a testament to what can happen when people come together with a shared vision to uplift and support rural communities,” said Susan Ferrin, Executive Director of FRCF. “The generosity of so many has left a lasting impact on these students, and we could not be more grateful.”
At FRCF, our mission is to strengthen and empower rural communities, and this experience was a shining example of that commitment in action. To Neil, Kelsea, Garden & Gun Magazine, and the Charleston donors—your generosity made this journey possible, and we thank you for investing in the future of these students.
Every opportunity made possible through community support reminds us that no dream is out of reach when people come together with a shared purpose. Here’s to many more firsts, new experiences, and a bright future for the young minds of tomorrow.
