SOLD: Foley Butte Ranch
By Jerry Hicks, Principal Broker, Licensed in OR
Lightning strikes twice! Feeling humbled and honored to be involved, once again, in the sale of North Central Oregon Timberland Ranch Foley Butte Ranch.
In 2013 as a newbie to Fay Ranches, a real estate brokerage, I worked on behalf of Stafford Ranches. We had gone under contract for the sale of a large Southern Oregon cattle ranch in Fields, Oregon. At nearly the same time, Ochoco Lumber Company had chosen to sell at auction. Their prize 32,000-acre tract “Foley Butte,” as it turned out, the Stafford family was the high bidder and successful buyer. After nearly ten years of ownership and numerous changes in the family business and the ranching and timber industries, a new season has come for the Staffords and Foley Butte.
A significant investment group will now call the Foley property theirs as they will manage the unique large block of forest ground into the future.
In my opinion, Foley Butte is a unicorn. We have seen several more extensive forest tracts in eastern Oregon, most of which have been very remote or lacking in older, larger timber stands. Foley Butte is the exception. Great Location for the owners and a well-managed timber base that offers both large older trees and premium timber grow sites, lots of water, and great roads, all due to outstanding management from both Stafford Ranches and Ochoco Lumber Company. I have been able to market and sell these large tracts and ranches for some time now, and it’s bitter-sweet when one like this goes off the books. One of the most pleasing things is showing a large, beautiful ranch like this one to a buyer or buyer group. Pack up the trucks and ATVs, put together a great lunch, beverages included, and head to the mountains where you’ll see big game, big trees, and big country.
