Why Oregon is a Great Place to Buy a Ranch

Written by: Jerry Hicks, Principal Broker, Licensed in OR

When it comes to buying a ranch, there are some places that immediately come to mind: Montana, Colorado, and Wyoming. But there is one place that consistently flies under the radar: Oregon.

As someone who has ranched in Oregon all my life, I can tell you, it’s mostly undiscovered as far as ranching is concerned. People simply don’t know it’s a great place to buy a ranch. Oregon is home to some of the most diverse landscapes in the country.

There are a lot of misconceptions about Oregon. People typically think the entire state is a dense rainforest, but that’s just what it’s like west of the Cascades. The land is completely different east of the Cascades. The terrain in the eastern two-thirds of the state is more like what you’d find in Montana or Idaho than the western side of Oregon. Think deep rock-walled canyons, juniper woodlands, forests, and meadows.

This makes Oregon a great place to hunt. Here you’ll find Rocky Mountain elk and mule deer. The big, open canyons lend themselves to true spotting and stalking opportunities. It’s addicting and contagious. Because of the terrain, you can pick out a big elk or mule deer and spend half the day moving into him. If you’re calling one in, you can see him coming a half-mile away or hear him as he makes his way to you.

Because Oregon is relatively undiscovered compared with other ranching states, you can get more ranch for your money here, about two to three times more acreage compared with other similar areas.

As I said, I’ve been ranching in rural central and eastern Oregon my entire life. When I look at descriptions of other ranches, I have confidence that Oregon’s ranches are well-positioned to carry the best value.

I encourage people who are interested in purchasing ranches to spend some time educating themselves on eastern and central Oregon and compare what they are finding elsewhere to what we have here. You can start your research here on our website by checking out the number of ranches we have available in eastern and central Oregon.
