Joette Schalla
Ranch Broker
Licensed in: CO
Joette has been a Colorado Ranch Broker since 2004, most recently at Blue Cedar Realty. Her focus has always been land, working ranches, and mountain properties, closing over 180 transactions during her time at Blue Cedar. As a Realtor’s Land Institute member, she is working toward her Accredited Land Consultant certification. She understands the needs of specialized equine professionals, what it takes to operate a true working ranch, or even the outdoor sporting benefits of recreational mountain property.
Joette grew up on a cattle ranch in Calhan, Colorado. Her parents bought and sold properties a few times, expanding their agricultural operation and reinvesting into more productive properties. They worked hard to become stewards of the land, passing their children’s knowledge and values down. Over time, the education and dedication paid off and earned them a conservation award for their efforts. They used a 1031 Exchange to obtain a more extensive operation south of Fowler, Colorado. While her parents had their Calhan ranch listed, Joette got her first taste of real estate. Joette would assist with many tours, quickly learning the difference between agents who came prepared for their showings and those who leaned on her because they were winging it. This is where she got the bug to pursue real estate sales as a career.
Joette has vast equestrian experience. On the English side of things, she competed in dressage, cross country, and show-jumping events. Participating in the 4-H horse program, she competed in all Western and English riding classes, including showmanship, equitation, pleasure, speed events, trail, and reining. As a high school rodeo standout, she earned several state titles: Reserve Colorado State Breakaway Roper, Finals Average Champion in Women’s Cutting, and Women’s All-Around Champion finals. This earned her a trip to the National High School Rodeo Finals. To top off her illustrious high school career, the basketball team she played on won the 1999 2-A Colorado State Women’s Championship.
Joette is a very driven and competitive person, and rodeo continued to be her passion in college, earning both an academic and rodeo scholarship. She attended Missouri Valley College, making the Dean’s Honor Roll both semesters and winning the Women’s Breakaway Roping Championship for the Ozark Region, qualifying for the College National Finals in Casper, Wyoming, in two events. After attending the CNFR in Casper, she was recruited to sign with Oklahoma Panhandle State University. Her years at Panhandle proved productive, making the Dean’s Honor Roll and winning a Women’s Breakaway Roping Reserve Championship for the Central Plains Region, which qualified her for the College National Finals again. Most importantly, she earned a bachelor’s degree with majors in marketing and finance and a minor in computer information systems.
Currently, she operates a commercial cow/calf operation and competes in rodeos. She calves in the spring, weaning and selling the calves in the late fall. Taking care of her cattle creates an easy transition into the ranch rodeo competitions. In 2015 she was honored to win the title of Top Horse at the Women’s Ranch Rodeo Association World Finals in Loveland, Colorado, and Top Horse at the Colorado State Fair Open Ranch Rodeo in Pueblo, Colorado. In 2020, her team, the High Plains Cowgirls, won the World Championship of the Women’s Ranch Rodeo Association, competing in numerous events throughout the season. In 2021 she earned the title of Top Hand at the Colorado State Fair Open Ranch Rodeo, competing amongst 80 men and women.
When she isn’t working on real estate, checking her cows, or headed to a rodeo competition, Joette enjoys traveling, especially if it includes deep-sea fishing or touring historical sites. Spending time with her family and boyfriend, Toby, is always at the top of her list. They enjoy fishing mountain lakes, sporting clays, and hunting game birds and varmints.

Grasslands CRP Program
It was once said, “The best thing about the land is the landscape.” A good point, but what is also very rewarding is an additional return on your investment through special programs designed to protect and preserve that landscape. Many landowners are unaware of ongoing incentives for maintaining or enhancing certain portions of their property, […]
