Oakie's Magic Mesa Or Lorie Darlin? A Horse''s Tale

So, this spring, we had a big event in our family. Our mare, Magic who is 16 yrs old was due to have her first baby.  You have to understand that Magic isn't just another mare, we have had her since she was 4. This horse is a very special member of our family. We have tried to have babies before, we tried to flush an embryo and have a recipient mare carry the baby because Magic is also a top notch head horse and to have her carry the baby would make her unavailable to rope on, so, we tried the alternative 4 times. it never worked and so this year we made the decision to let her carry her own baby. BIG, HUGE decision!

And she really got big..

I watched her every minute, especially the closer we got to April 20, her
due date. She paced a lot.

I have to admit, she got a little tired of the whole thing, of the camera, and
maybe me.

I had her in the barn every night and was checking her every 2 hrs.until the
night of the 20th when Bill talked me into skipping my 2am check to get some
sleep because we were branding the next day.and I was getting tired.it was
worse than calving!

And when I went back down the next morning.there she was.I MISSED it!

Magic had little palamino filly, her sire belongs to dear friends of ours
and his name is Beiber's Oakie, he's a palamino too - Bill was really hoping
for a stud colt, but.

This is her first day out of the barn, she's 3 days old

Happy times!

Here she is at just over 2 weeks - getting so pretty!

This was just the other day,  3 weeks and growing. We are still trying to
name her, we are down to Oakie's Magic Mesa OR Lorie Darlin'  - from
Lonesome Dove, Gus calls Lorena "Lorie Darlin', pretty as the morning"? I
apologize to those of you who aren't familiar with Lonesome Dove and highly
recommend you rent it.. Anyway, any ideas?

Oh! And she likes the camera much better than her Mom does! She's a little
ham!
